LIFE ON A RIVER

Ever thought of having a peaceful place to have fun? A place away from the hustle of city life? In the Western belt of Ghana?

Don’t think of a normal village or a hotel out of town. Just think of a village on river. Yes! A village on river. ‘NZULEZO’ is the name and it is about one hour canoe ride from ‘BEYIM’, the nearest village.

Are you wondering why normal human begins would think of settling and living their lives on river? Well, the people of the village believe that they migrated from some part of West Africa where tier very existence was being threatened by enemies who were bigger and taller than them. When they realised they could not fight against them, they decided to leave the land form them and settle somewhere else. They spoke to their god through one man and he led them and handed them over to the river god. They then decided to name the river ‘River AMUZWE’; after the man the god spoke through. Strange huh!

According to the chief of the village, when a child was born, it was presented to the river god for protection, even though most of the villagers are now Christians. They believe that due to this protection, on native of the ‘NZULEZO’ has ever drowned. Also strange huh!

You would be marvelled to know that the main occupation of the villagers is farming and not fishing. The villagers have small stretch of land on one bank of the river where they plant food stuffs.

In the village, you would find a school, a construction or carpentry shop, a community centre, a church, a house for the god (call it a shrine if you want), a mini super market where you can buy things ranging from petty drugs to toiletries and other provisions.

Their houses are built with tree stumps or stems and bamboo. Their only sources of energy are two generators which is switched on at 6.00pm and put off at 12.00 midnight.

Their means of transport to and from the next village and to and from other places is by canoe rides. By age six a child would have and know how to paddle his own canoe. Interesting, isn’t it?

Their only source of water is the river water. They use the river water to bath, cook, and drink and do any other thing they need water for.

The only essential thing they do not have is a clinic or a community health nurse. When people fall sick they treat them with herbs and if it becomes critical they take them to the only clinic the nearest village.

The choice is yours. If you ever want to spent life away from the noisiness of the city, try ‘NZULEZO’. You would have so much time in the village on the village on river: Only in Ghana.
